Words from the Chair...
SAC ELECTIONS!! You should be receiving the ballot for the SAC elections in your campus mailbox today or tomorrow. Please be sure to vote and return them as soon as possible. We will also be electing a new President for SAC at our September meeting so I will report on our new council members and our new President in the next Newsletter.

Only in Missouri could we experience such weather extremes as we have had this past week! When the weather people were telling us that Labor Day was the last summery weekend, it hardly felt like it when the temperature rose to 102 degrees and it felt like 110! But after all the cool rain it sure does seem like summer may indeed be over.

United Way News!
The United Way Campaign will be getting underway in September so I thought I would share a few of the important dates with you.

September 15th--David Franta, the Columbia Area United Way Executive Director, and Pat Hostletler, the Chair of the Columbia Area Campaign along with the UM System Marketing Committee is making a presentation to the President's Staff Meeting.

September 15th--UM System Key Person's Meeting

September 26th--United Way Kick-off breakfast, 7:30am-9:00am at Stotler Lounge, Memorial Union. Key Persons will receive their packets at this time.

September 26th--MU vs KU Tailgate Party and United Way Campaign Kick-off. Look for posters advertising this event and there will be more news about this in the next SAC Newsletter.

October 3rd--Community Event, 7:30am, Columbia Mall and UM System Day of Caring at Central Missouri Food Bank.We are delighted to be returning to the Food Bank!

Does Missouri really have a hunger problem? (from the Central Missouri Food Bank opening pages)
"The food bank network predominantly serves the working poor and the elderly. A recent survey identified those using food pantry services as white, single females, between the ages of 25-55, with one or two children. These women do not receive food stamps and have an income of less than $950 per month.

In 2002, the food bank distributed more than 15.5 million pounds of food and related products which helped feed more than 52,000 people per month. More than 90,000 people in our service area live at or below the poverty level and are eligible to receive the food we distribute_"

"Doners don't give to institutions. They invest in ideas and people in whom they believe." G.T. Smith

When I give to organizations such as the United Way or the Central Missouri Food Bank, I really don't think of the big picture. I remember my daughters' house burning to the ground while we watched all the belongings of her and her husband and my 3 granddaughters just disappear. I remember how the Red Cross stepped in immediately with clothes, toiletries and food, bedding, pillows, towels and hairbrushes--all the comfort items we all take for granted.

I remember my older daughter doing community service work at the Central Missouri Food Bank and helping people who were truly hungry and how she realized her teenage life wasn't so bad after all.

The Food Bank and United Way Agencies have helped adults and children who I know personally!

"Charity sees the need, not the cause." Proverb-German

Are we sometimes guilty of not giving because we are annoyed by someone who won't seem to help themself? We work hard, but they sit on welfare all day...what about the children, tho. It is not their doing--they've done nothing wrong to be sent to bed hungry.

Editor's Corner!
Staff Advisory Council meetings are open to all UM System Staff. Meeting times are 9:00am-11:00am the second Wednesday of the month. The locations are posted on our website on the "Events Calendar." Our website is by now familiar to everyone, I hope, but we add things all the time, so give it a look again. We will be doing some redesigning in the future, and hope to have pictures of the Staff Appreciation Week Events up there soon!! To see additional pictures, click on the refresh button on the toolbar and the picture will change. If you have any questions about the Newsletter, or the Staff Advisory Council, please send me an email!
