Words from the Chair...
As your new UM Staff Advisory Council Chairperson I would like to thank everyone who participated in the recent elections. As it turns out, there were enough vacancies to offer all of the candidates a position! I would also like to extend a special thanks to our out-going chairperson, Donna Barnes. She is still on the council, but decided to "relax" this year. I only hope that I can be as well organized as she has been.

Also, as you see them around your workplace, please take a moment to congratulate your newest council members: Rebecca Bohlmeyer, Rhonda Turner, and Ken Brooks; and don't forget our returning members Richard Begemann and myself. Most people think that we're just here to organize Staff Recognition Week, but in fact we are constantly providing feedback on work related issues to the President and General Officers. We can't do that without your input and your support; so don't be bashful about telling us what's on your mind.

United Way News!
September 26th
--MU vs KU Tailgate Party and United Way Campaign Kick-off.

Despite the rain, we had lots of folks come out to enjoy the fun, and the tailgate party turned out to be a big success; we made $660! Special thanks to Dr. Floyd, Memoree Bradley, Richard Begemann and Patrick Kempf for being the targets in the dunking booth! If you let the rain keep you away you missed some great fun, not to mention delicious hot dogs from Jack’s! See pictures of the event at: http://www.system.missouri.edu/ics/care/kickoff.html

Between proceeds from the tailgate party, and early givers, we had $11,580 towards our goal by September 30th. As of October 13th we had over $30,000 collected! We are at 73% of our Goal with plenty of time to beat it before the deadline!!

If you have not returned your pledge card, it is not too late!!

October 3rd--Community Event, UM System Day of Caring at Central Missouri Food Bank.

We processed over 31,000 pounds of food!

There were a total of 75 volunteers at the Food Bank (41 in the morning and 34 in the afternoon) and one volunteer at the Food Pantry.

The Staff at The Food Bank were very grateful for our hard work and look forward to next year's Day of Caring Event.

Volunteers, please pass the word on how much fun we had so we have more volunteers in 2004!!!

Lewis and Clark Anniversary Sparks United Way Theme for Lewis/Clark Halls

System employees in Lewis and Clark Hall will receive weekly reminders of the United Way campaign through handouts celebrating the journey of explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark.

Themes encouraging a spirit of adventure and reminiscent of the successful expedition, which are being used to encourage United Way support are:

"Lewis and Clark Lead the Way" (A Missouri state map was distributed with the message.)
"Join the Journey with Lewis and Clark” (A coupon for 50% off film deveoping was distributed with the message.)
“Lewis and Clark … Gateway to Giving”
“Lewis and Clark Guiding the Voyage” (A shiny new Missouri quarter was distributed with the message!)
"Lewis and Clark Celebrate" (a successful campaign).

Tokens being distributed with the messages were donated by individuals, a state agency, a Columbia business and administrative units. The Lewis and Clark publicity committee urges Lewis and Clark employees to watch for the next message and gift item. Committee members are Jeanne Miner, Debbie Ricker, Suzanne Schoonover, Sandy Stegall and Susan Tharp.

Congratulations to the following UM-System Staff members who have attained these milestones of service!

"I was just looking at some of the communications materials put out by United Way, and saw that Nora Stewart Nursery School can provide one day of subsidized childcare for $20. If we raise another $4800 in pledges, that could help a family for a whole year. Having gone through the experience of trying to find (and then afford) suitable daycare so I could go back to work, I can’t help but think of how much relief -- both financial and mental – our pledges can provide for a struggling family.

I’ve also had some personal experience working with someone who had MS and couldn’t shop or fix meals for himself. Meals on Wheels delivered a meal to him several times a week, and that was his main source of food. Another $6000 in United Way pledges could provide 600 meals to people who, like my friend, may actually need that food to survive. Awesome, huh?!"
