UM Staff Advisory Council Members 2005-2006

Words from the Chair

Staff Recognition Week (SRW) will be in May again this year, 15th - 19th. As we are looking at administrative reductions, the UM Staff Advisory Council felt that we should also look at ways to make reductions in the costs associated with SRW. To give everyone a chance to participate we did not cut any of the events, but we are going to make some changes. This year SAC will not provide cookies and soda for the Trivial Pursuit contest, there will be no t-shirt sales, and rather than an Awards Luncheon we will be having an Awards Reception. We still want to recognize everyone who has contributed to the University, whether it be with 5 years of service or 40 years of service; and we will still have the monetary awards for the Service/Support (non-exempt employees below the level of director), Administrative/Professional (exempt employees below the level of director), and the President's Award (top ranked nominations from each category are considered for this award); and a reception rather than a luncheon will allow us to give out those awards, while keeping in line with the President's reduction request.

The purpose of SRW is to recognize your service to the University. If you know of someone who has shown exemplary service to the University, please nominate them for one of the awards. The nomination form is on the SAC website - http://www.umsystem.edu/sac/srw/index.html. The deadline for nominations is March 3rd.

Check the SAC website - http://www.umsystem.edu/sac/ - and future newsletters for dates, times, and sign-up information; and come enjoy SRW with us.

**Due to the current effort to identify administrative reductions, the UM Survey/Questionnaire mentioned in a previous newsletter, has been put on hold until this effort is completed. However, SAC would appreciate hearing your suggestions/ideas/concerns. Please continue to use the "Suggestion Box" located at http://www.umsystem.edu/sac/suggestion/index.html to express any ideas/suggestions/thoughts that may be on your mind. We welcome all ideas for improvement.

Chair Becky Bohlmeyer 2005-2006 UM SAC

Staff Recognition Week
May 15-19, 2006

Mark your calendars now so you do not miss an activity that you want to participate in during SRW. The purpose of Staff Recognition Week is to recognize your service and dedication to the University. Awards are given to those who have been nominated and are selected by a committee for the outstanding service. UM Staff Recognition Awards are presented to staff that best represent the University through a combination of criteria related to performance, leadership, reliability, and dependability, along with his or her ability to relate his or his work to the mission and goal of the University.
For guidelines and a printable nomination form click here. (available February 8, 2006)

Reminder:

President Floyd invited employees on January 4, 2006 to prepare ideas on how to reduce expenses by 10% at System, and submit their suggestions to their supervisor, the Vice Presidents, or to his office. UM-System Staff have until February 17, 2006 to submit ideas on reducing expenses by 10%. The preliminary reduction plans will go in early April to the President's Leadership Team. Gaps that need to be filled, or targets that were not met, will be subject to further work. The final plan will then be submitted to the Board of Curators for its consideration by early summer. The reduction suggestions can include all aspects of administration, but does not include anything labeled as an Academic Priority or Teaching. The effort is to capture savings to re-invest into the academic programs and strategic priorities of the University as reflected in the UM Strategic Plan. For your convenience, two online sites are available to submit ideas.
