UM Staff Advisory Council Members 2006-2007

Words from the Chair

Greetings!

It is with much excitement that I announce your new SAC members! The following staff members were elected to SAC in September: Nathan Billings, Antonia Jones, Beth Monson, and Kevin Summers. Biographies of each new member will be included in this newsletter so that you can get to know them. Council appreciates their willingness to serve and look forward to a productive year. During our September meeting, Council voted Mary Ann Ihler as its new Chair. Congratulations to Mary Ann!

I also want to extend a sincere thank-you to those staff members who have completed their term on Council. Those staff members include John Brooks, Tanya Haeussler, Marsha Moore, and myself.

This year's United Way "Day of Caring" was a HUGE success. Of course, I think most of us now have some kind of aversion to hot dogs, but oh well! : Each of you should have received your pledge card for this year's campaign. If you have not received your card yet, please contact your department representative. I encourage each of you to thoughtfully consider giving to this year's campaign. YOU really can make a difference!

Our next scheduled meeting is Friday, October 12th at 8:30 a.m. in the President's Conference Room (PCR), University Hall. As always, we welcome your comments, questions, and suggestions. We are here for YOU!

Warm regards, Rusty
UM SAC Chair Rusty Crawford

Meet Your New Staff Advisory Council Members

Beth Monson
Beth has worked in Government Relations as a Program Assistant since June 2006 and has been with the University of Missouri since July 2003. She lives in Columbia with her husband, Ron, who is a Supervisor for Columbia Public Schools and their two children Nickolas, age 10 and Brooke, age 8. She looks forward to working with everyone on the UMSAC council and representing UM employees.

Kevin Summers
Kevin Summers came to Columbia in the fall of 1973 to attend the University of Missouri. He majored in Business Administration and went on to work for two major retail organizations over the next 22 years. He held various management positions with Montgomery Ward and JC Penney Co. Those years were valuable as they taught him the value of accomplishing goals through people. In November 1997, JC Penney downsized its management force nationwide so he sought a position with the University of Missouri Hospital and Clinics as a Buyer. He later was promoted to Senior Buyer then Contract Specialist. In November 2005, he became a Senior Buyer for Campus Procurement Services. Kevin has lived in Columbia since his college days. He has been married for 28 years and have two daughters ages 17 and 13. His wife is a lifetime resident of Columbia and they enjoy the great lifestyle that Columbia has to offer. His hobbies are golf and classic cars.

Antonia Jones
Antonia has been with Faculty & Staff Benefits as a Benefits Advocate for the last 3 years. She previously worked for State of Missouri Dept of Natural Resources for 7 years. She is the mother of three kids; DeJa' age 16, DeShawn age 12 & D'Markeion age 14 months. Her hobbies are cooking, reading and traveling. She is looking forward to being a part of Staff Advisory Council.

Nathan Billings
Nathan first started with the University of Missouri in 2003 as an HR Associate in the Human Resources office on the Columbia campus. After eight months, he moved to St. Louis to be closer to his wife-to-be who was attending the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. He spent three years working as an HR Specialist with the School District of Clayton. On weekends and evenings in while living in St. Louis, he worked as Music Director at the Webster Hills United Methodist Church conducting two adult choirs, a handbell choir, and various other ensembles.
Nathan and his wife Sarah decided to escape "city life" and move back to Columbia where Nathan was thrilled to return to the university community as a Compensation Analyst. He currently works with Bill Edwards on compensation and classification issues, all of which are top secret and as such, he is unable to provide further information.
He will sing with the Choral Union at UMC this fall and in his spare time he likes to travel, play the piano and the organ, and is currently training with a new puppy.
He continues to be amazed at how friendly and open people are here at UM and how so many people go the extra mile to help their colleagues. He sees SAC as a way to give back to those who have welcomed and helped him. He looks forward to giving of his time and effort to build community, plan the events that acknowledge the hard work each of you do, and serve as a voice for your ideas and concerns.

United Way Campaign 2007

The University's 2007 United Way campaign has officially begun!
The campaign kicked off with the annual "Day of Caring" in mid-September. More than 60 employees worked 4 hours or more at the Central Missouri Food Bank packaging bulk food for family distribution or painting food collection barrels. More than 18,000 pounds of food was processed during the day and 126 barrels were painted. A big thank-you to all participants and especially to Brian McNamee for coordinating this year's event.

Donor cards will be distributed very soon through your department's key person. The overall Community Campaign goal exceeds $3.1 million dollars and the University's goal is $575,000. UM System offices are looking to beat last year's achievement of more than $50,000. With your continued support, we will be able to meet the needs of our community. Be looking for announcements of local United Way meetings and please encourage your co-workers to give a helping hand;
