UM Staff Advisory Council Members 2005-2006

Words from the Chair

Now that school is back in session, I'm sure everyone has even more activities penciled in on their calendars. Here are a few "special" days in September that I bet you weren't aware of.

September 1st was Cherry Popover Day; the 4th was Bright Idea Day, the 8th is Pardon Me Day; the 13th is Positive Thinking Day; the 20th Thank You Day; the 28th Strawberry Cream Pie Day (yum!); and my favorite, the 30th is Ask a Stupid Question Day. For other fun and unusual event days, check out http://www.rumela.com/events/index.htm. More traditional days include the 17th, which is Constitution Day, and the first day of Autumn is the 23rd. Maybe we can use this as a category for Trivial Pursuit next year :-)

Hope you are enjoying the cooler weather, and lower gas prices!

UM SAC Chair Becky Bohlmeyer

UM SAC Trivia

September 17 is the day to celebrate
The Constitution of the United States..
(do you remember these facts)

After the American Revolution the states were functioning under the Articles of Confederation. As time passed it became clear that changes to this system had to be made. A convention of delegates from all the states except Rhode Island met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in May of 1787. George Washington was chosen president of the convention. By the end of the month it was decided that the best solution to the young country's problems was to set aside the Articles of Confederation and write a new constitution. This was not an easy chore. Three months later and after a lot of debate and compromise, on September 17, 1787, the Constitution of the United States was finally accepted by the delegates. But their work was not done.

The Founding Fathers now had to get all the states to agree that this was a good document and that they should vote in favor of it. This was the first great political question that faced Americans. Nine states had to vote for the Constitution for it to be accepted. On December 3, 1787, Delaware was the first state to vote in favor of (ratify) it. New Hampshire became the ninth state to accept the Constitution on June 21, 1788, ending government under the Articles of Confederation. It was not until May 29, 1790 that the last state, Rhode Island, finally accepted the Constitution.

The Constitution of the United States is the cornerstone of our American government. In 4,543 words this document describes the structure or plan of the government and the rights of the American people. The Constitution is known as a "living document" because it can be amended. Since its ratification, it has only been changed (amended) 27 times. The Constitution is a strong document, more powerful than any branch of government or any state. At the same time, it is flexible enough to allow for freedom and changes in America.
The Constitution is organized into three parts:
  • Preamble: Describes the purpose of the document and government.
  • Articles: Establish how the government is structured and how the Constitution can be changed. There are seven articles.
  • Amendments: Changes to the Constitution; the first ten are called the Bill of Rights

  • Dear Colleague:

As part of the University of Missouri's emphasis on employee wellness, I want to encourage you to participate in the Shape Up Missouri Program. Shape Up Missouri is a program of the Show-Me State Games and the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Health, designed to help all Missourian's make healthier lifestyle choices. The fall session will run from September 18 - November 20 and the spring session will run from January 22 - April 16.

As part of our dedication to the well being of all employees, the University of Missouri encourages participation in wellness initiatives such as the Shape Up Missouri Program. Shape Up Missouri is an excellent opportunity to team up with fellow employees while improving your overall health and fitness.

The kick off for the fall session of Shape Up Missouri Program will be September 18. For more information go to http://www.SMSG.org/sum.

    Sincerely,

    Elson S. Floyd, Ph.D.
